ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship and symbiotic efficiency of 14 strains of Burkholderia isolated from rupestrian grasslands, using M. atropurpureum and Mimosa tenuiflora as trap plants, with the species M. atropurpureum, Mimosa bimucronata and M. foliolosa. For the nodulation and symbiotic efficiency test in M. atropurpureum, long-neck bottles containing nutrient solution were used. The experiments with Mimosa spp. were carried out in tubes containing vermiculite (160 cm3) and sand (80 cm3) (2:1). ABSTRACT Previous ecological studies of dioecious plant species have found that female plants preferentially occur at lower altitudes where there are typically better nutritional conditions, while male plants often occur in less favorable sites. We compared the ecophysiological performance of male and female plants in three populations of the dioecious Baccharis concinna, an endemic species of rupestrian grasslands of Serra do Cipó, in southeastern Brazil. ABSTRACT Rupestrian complexes of the Serra do Espinhaço are recognized for their high degree of biodiversity and endemism. However, environmental impacts, particularly from mining, have degraded these environments. The purpose of this study was to describe the herbaceous-subshrub communities that occur in quartzitic (QRC) and ferruginous (FRC) rupestrian complexes in different seasons of the year, with regard to floristic similarity and phytosociological structure. Leiothrix is endemic of South America and includes 37 species, 25 of which occur in the state of Minas Gerais. Nineteen of those occur in the "Serra do Cipó", a mountain chain, located in the southern portion of the Espinhaço mountain range. This study examines vegetative propagation strategies of four species of Leiothrix, endemic to the Minas Gerais portion of the Espinhaço mountain range. For each species we established permanent plots, where we marked 30 to 51 rosettes or clones, and then took morphological and phenological measurements. Leiothrix crassifolia (Bong.)
